Angel Fish Scientific Name
Pterophyllum scalare
Pterophyllum eimekei
Angel Fish Family
They belong to the family Cichlidae
Angel Fish Origin
These fish are native to the Central Amazon region of South America; they are found in Brazil, Peru and Columbia.
Angel Fish Description
There are no visible differences between the male and female. Only at spawning will you be able to tell the male from the female. A female has a round "tear-drop" shaped breeding tube and a male has a cone shaped breeding tube. Very distinct are their extended dorsal and anal fins as well as the long and thin pelvic fins. There are various colors and pattern varieties of angelfish like zebra, koi, marbled, black and golden forms
Angel Fish Adult Size
These fish can grow up to 6 inches (15 cm) but are smaller averaging 4 inches when grown in tanks
Angel Fish Life Span
These fish have a lifespan of 8 to 10 years
Angel Fish Compatible Tankmates
Tank mates for angelfish include numerous popular community fish, with the exception of some of the notorious "fin nippers", such as tiger barbs. Well suited as tankmates include hatchet fish, pencil fish, silver dollars, dwarf cichlids, platies, swordtails, mollies, corydoras and ancistrus cat fish, bloodfin tetras and other angelfish.
Social: Community Vs. semi-aggressive Vs. Aggressive
They are generally peaceful, but can be aggressive eaters and may become territorial while breeding. They may eat small fish like tetras and guppies especially if they were in the tank long before the smaller fish are added. This aggression towards other Angels is better managed in larger, taller and well planted aquariums.
Angel Fish Breeding: Egglayer vs. Livebearer
They will lay many adhesive eggs on a clean leaf or any vertical or diagonal surface. They are not difficult to breed if you have a pair.
Angel Fish Care
You should provide the right aquarium size, water temperature, filtration system and some live plants. High temperature or too much heat of the water and too much coldness of the water can kill this fish. Low temperature can slow down the growth of angelfish as well reduce the expected life span. Try to provide the right temperature and water quality for Angels to survive a long time.
Angel Fish Diet
They are usually very good eaters and they will take flakes, granular food and pellets, freeze dried (blood worms, brine shrimp) and especially live foods.
Angel Fish Tank Size
These fish will need a tank of at least 25 gallons for two individuals
Angel Fish pH
The pH level should be 6.0 to 7.5
Angel Fish Water Hardness
The water hardness should be up to 5 to 13 dGH.
Angel Fish Temperature
The temperature should be 74 to 84 degrees Fahrenheit or 23 to 29 Celsius.
